PLACES I HAVE LIVED
HOMELESS IN AMERICA
The beginning
1985

Venice Beach Ca. boardwalk
This is where it all started for me and the beginning of nearly 20 years of Homelessness not far from this boardwalk. This area is where I lived through the winter of 1985 living in a wooden box, believe it or not, that was suspended from the ceiling over a car in a parking garage for about 6 months not far from these buildings on the beach. Later that year I would move to Hollywood for some community service to get a little cash assistance from the state. Back then I think the amount was 149 dollars after 2 weeks of community service.
Hollywood Ca.
1985 to 1987

Hollywood California
1985 to 1987
I stayed not far from this Hollywood sign, there is only one, in a park that is to the left of the sign in the photo about 2 miles away. Directly behind this sign is the famous Burbank studios where the Johnny Carson show was produced and where today the Jay Leno show is made. I used to hike up to the top of the hills nearby just to the left out of this picture and watch stunt riders attempt to ride dirt bikes up to the sign using a very steep trail that go’s strait up the left side of this hill and ends where you see the trees at the top in the photo which is very hard to do. I tried to ride a dirt bike that I found abandoned on the side of the road on a friends property in Hollywood and used the money to rebuild the motor. Then I attempted to ride the rebuilt dirt bike up the steep trail to the sign and never even made it up 1/4 the distance to the sign from the bottom and had to throw the bike down the hill about 225 yards or so. The trail is a little over 1/4 mile long all the way to the top and you cannot get caught at the top and must turn around and descend as soon as you reach the top. I do not know what I was thinking about but it seemed like a good idea at the time. That’s why they are pro’s. The bike survived. I’m still Homeless. Any way this is where it gets complicated and I had to leave Cali. and return to New York because just after that attempt up the Hollywood sign trail I was stoped by the L.A.P.D. and promptly beaten about the head, slammed, ow, on the hood of the cop car by a cop that was over 7 feet tall, no kidding, and then thrown in jail, it seems I neglected to register the bike before riding on the street when the guy who abandoned the bike refused to send me the title, and the bike was put in a impound lot and then sold to a junk yard I used to frequent and I saw all that work I did to it stripped off for pennies on the dollar so I left and went back to New York where I then moved to Virginia after living off welfare in New York from '88 to '90 or '91.

A city where I was living Homeless in
1991 and 1992
I was staying literally on the battlefield itself where Grant defeated Lee and about 200 yards from the sign that is in place along the road there that designates the original Civil War battlefield’s location.

I don't believe I found this photo below of the internet photography sites but this is where I used to sit, exactly, directly across the street from the restaurant in the photo holding a sign while Homeless in Old Town Virgina in 2006 to 2008 when I revisted the area and I literly stayed right here between that corner and the water front just behind the potographer nearly all day throughout the years I was in Old Town.

At the top of the hill in this photo I asked a passer-by if he could spare a quarter and he opened up the trunk of his car that was parked in front of a bank there and reached into one of three bags and pulled out 65 one dollar gold coins. I bought a U.S. military sleeping bag with the coins. I still have the sleeping bag I bought with those gold coins today.
